Advancing the Conversation on Healthy Aging

The science of aging is evolving rapidly. New discoveries are continually reshaping how we think about metabolism, nutrition, physical function, cognitive health, and the biology of aging itself.

I've had the privilege of contributing to that conversation for more than 25 years through clinical research, scientific publications, mentoring, and collaboration with investigators around the world.

When I present to academic and clinical audiences, I approach each engagement as an opportunity for shared learning. I enjoy discussing both established evidence and emerging ideas, exploring where the science is strongest, where important questions remain, and how new discoveries can be translated into research and clinical practice.

My goal is not simply to present data, but to foster meaningful discussion that advances understanding and ultimately improves the health and well-being of the populations we serve.

A Summary of My Research Focus.

My research has centered on a fundamental question:

How can we help people live longer, healthier, and more independent lives?

Over the past 25 years, I've led and collaborated on clinical and translational research spanning healthy aging, metabolic health, nutrition, and lifestyle interventions. My work has explored topics including:

Intermittent Fasting and Time-restricted Eating,

Metabolic Flexibility and Insulin Sensitivity,

Sarcopenia and Physical Function,

Body Composition Across the Lifespan,

Cognitive Aging,

and the biological mechanisms through which nutrition and lifestyle influence the aging process.

Across these areas, my goal has remained the same—to identify practical, evidence-based strategies that improve healthspan and translate scientific discovery into meaningful benefits for patients and populations.

My research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, including the National Institute on Aging, as well as other federal agencies.

At the University of Florida, I serve as a Professor and have been honored as a UF Research Foundation Professor and Preeminent Term Professor in recognition of sustained excellence in research and scholarship.

I have also been recognized with the Master Mentor Award from the University of Florida's Mentor Academy for my commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists and clinicians.

My work has also contributed to advancing the scientific understanding of intermittent fasting and metabolic health. My review article, Flipping the Metabolic Switch: Understanding and Applying Health Benefits of Fasting, was the most-downloaded paper published in the journal Obesity in 2019 and helped bring greater scientific attention to the role of fasting in promoting metabolic health.

Intermittent Fasting: Current Evidence and Clinical Applications

Drawing from more than two decades of research in nutrition and healthy aging, this presentation provides a comprehensive review of the evidence surrounding intermittent fasting, including time-restricted eating, alternate-day fasting, and prolonged fasting. Topics include metabolic outcomes, body composition, safety considerations, implementation strategies, and emerging areas of investigation, with practical insights for both researchers and clinicians.

Metabolic Health, Metabolic Flexibility, and Healthy Aging

Metabolic dysfunction underlies many of the chronic conditions associated with aging. This presentation examines the biology of metabolic flexibility, the role of skeletal muscle in maintaining metabolic health, and the evidence supporting dietary, exercise, and lifestyle interventions that promote metabolic resilience across the lifespan.

Maintaining muscle mass and physical function is essential for healthy aging and independence. Lifestyle Interventions for Brain Health and Cognitive Aging

Growing evidence demonstrates that cognitive aging is influenced by modifiable lifestyle factors. This presentation examines the relationships among metabolic health, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and stress while reviewing current clinical evidence for reducing dementia risk and promoting cognitive resilience.

The Biology of Aging: From Mechanisms to Translation

Advances in the biology of aging are rapidly changing how we think about disease prevention and healthy longevity. This presentation explores key biological mechanisms—including mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, cellular senescence, and impaired nutrient sensing—and discusses how these discoveries are informing clinical research and future interventions designed to extend healthspan.

Over the course of my career, I've been invited to present my research and perspectives at academic medical centers, national and international scientific conferences, continuing medical education programs, institutional seminars, and grand rounds.

My presentations have reached diverse audiences—including physicians, scientists, allied health professionals, trainees, and students—across disciplines such as geriatrics, internal medicine, endocrinology, nutrition, rehabilitation, exercise science, and aging research.

Whether speaking to a small research group or delivering a keynote at a national conference, my goal is the same: to present rigorous science in a way that stimulates discussion, encourages collaboration, and advances our understanding of healthy aging.

Each invitation begins with a conversation. I'll work with the organizer to understand the audience, the educational objectives, the desired level of scientific depth, and any institutional or CME requirements. Whether the audience consists of students, trainees, clinicians, or established investigators, I tailor each presentation to their interests and level of expertise.

A Professional, Seamless Process

Once the topic is established, I provide all requested materials—including my biography, disclosures, learning objectives, and presentation materials—in the format and timeframe your institution requires. My goal is to make the planning process as straightforward as possible for your team.

An Interactive Learning Experience

I view every presentation as an opportunity for discussion as much as instruction. Questions are encouraged throughout the session, and I always reserve time for thoughtful discussion, recognizing that many of the most valuable insights emerge through conversation with colleagues.

Continuing the Conversation

Whenever possible, I enjoy staying after the presentation to meet with faculty, trainees, and attendees. These informal conversations often lead to new ideas, collaborations, and opportunities to further advance research, education, and clinical practice.

Honoraria and Availability.

Academic speaking fees vary by format, institution type, and whether travel is required. I am available to discuss honorarium expectations directly and can accommodate a range of institutional budgets.

I take a limited number of academic speaking engagements per year to protect time for research and clinical work. Early inquiry is appreciated for events with firm deadlines.

For grand rounds and internal seminars at academic medical centers, I welcome the conversation regardless of honorarium.
