With the amount of people who start their day with coffee, and the surging popularity of intermittent fasting, many are wondering: Does coffee break a fast?
Below I’ll cover whether coffee breaks a fast and other details related to coffee and intermittent fasting.
Table of Contents
Technically, any calories “break” a fast. However, the fasting state can be maintained when you consume very few calories.
While a zero-calorie fast maximizes results, an extremely low calorie fast still provides substantial results.
“So, can I drink coffee while fasting?”
Black coffee, yes. A cup of black coffee has less than five calories and no carbs or protein, so it practically does not affect fasting.
For all other types of coffee, the sections below provide additional information.
Autophagy improves overall cell function (improves overall health). If the goal is to enhance autophagy, you should consume very few calories during fasting.
If you are focused on autophagy, your coffee should have less than:
25 calories
3 grams of carbs
1 gram of protein
Autophagy is delicate. The closer to pure black coffee you can get, the better.
Ketosis improves fat loss (among other things).
If the goal is to maintain ketosis, you can consume some calories, provided they are mostly from high fat additions, such as cream, butter, or medium-chain triglycerides.
These additions will not take the body out of a ketogenic state, so you can add them to coffee without breaking ketosis.
If you are focused on ketosis, your coffee should have less than:
As you can see, ketosis is not as delicate as autophagy. Still, the less additional ingredients you consume, the more benefits you will experience.
Coffees come in many different styles. Below is a list of the 21 most popular types of coffee and whether or not they break a fast:
Overall, does coffee break a fast depends on the reason for your fast (autophagy or ketosis), and the type of coffee you consume.
In general, fasting and coffee can coexist without breaking a fast. In fact, there may be synergistic effects when fasting and coffee are combined correctly.
To help create a proper pairing, remember that black coffee is best and if you have to add ingredients, limit calories, carbs, and protein.

I've organized everything I offer around five core areas. You probably need help in more than one of these areas - most people do. The good news is if you improve in one area, you are likely to see improvements in other areas.

You want to wake up ready to go, not drag through the day. This is about optimizing how your body processes food and fuel. Better metabolism means better energy, easier weight control, and stronger physical performance.

Protecting your brain and maintaining your mental clarity as you age isn't something that happens by accident. It requires specific nutrition, sleep habits, movement, and lifestyle strategies specific to brain health. I'll show you exactly what works.

Maintaining muscle, balance, and mobility is what allows you to live a full life and stay independent as you age. Whether it’s hiking, skiing, playing with your kids (or grandkids) or just moving through your day without stiffness - this matters.

Your body needs proper recovery to stay healthy. This includes good quality sleep, stress management, and movement strategies that help you bounce back faster.

Physical health is part of the equation. So is feeling like you're in control of your future, living with purpose, and knowing you're doing the right things at the right times.

Not required, but recommended. The consultation helps me understand your specific situation so I can recommend the right program. Some people jump straight into the 90-Day Program or Mastery Program—that's fine too. Either way, just start with the services page.
Email me. I try to answer questions when I can, but I'm not a free advice hotline. If it's a complex question or requires a longer conversation, I'll suggest booking a consultation.
Yes. Most of my clients are not in Florida. Everything is online unless you're local and we arrange something specific.
Usually 30-45 minutes. We focus on understanding your goals, what's been challenging, and which approach might work best for you.
Email me directly with details about what you have in mind. If it's a good fit, we'll talk.
